That's right everybody! Rookie camp has begun which means hockey is just around the corner! The Bruins have been sneakily holding spontaneous practices (Captains Practice) for who ever wants to shake the cobwebs off before Training Camp starts September 11th. The rooks are now fighting for a spot in the lineup. There are some old and new faces invited to rookie camp this season.
BOSTON BRUINS 2013-14 ROOKIE CAMP ROSTER:
FORWARDS: Anthony Camara, Mitchell Dempsey, Campbell Elynuik, Alex Fallstrom, Justin Florek, Seth Griffith, Jayden Hart, Alexander Khokhlachev, Jared Knight, Matthew Lindblad, Wayne Simpson, Ryan Spooner, Maxime Villemaire
DEFENSEMEN: Mickael Beauregard, Chris Casto, Alex Cord, Tommy Cross, Jesse Lees, Steven Spinell, Zach Trotman
GOALTENDERS: Adam Morrison, Malcolm Subban
So who has a shot at playing with the big boys? The third line is looking for some fresh faces and here's who I think could cut it.
Jared Knight: Battle Creek Michigan, 1992(RW).
Although Knight is prone to injuries, he has real potential. During the OHL Memorial Cup in 2011-2012 Knight scored 26 goals had 26 assists and was a plus 23 with 28 penalty minutes in 52 games. His playing style would fit in perfectly with the Big Bad Bruins and with some concussion history he'll fit right in! But in all seriousness, if Knight can stay healthy he has a good shot at making the big time.
Spooner came into his own last season where he began to shine and led all AHL rookies in scoring. He was constantly compared to Knight (his good buddy and roommate) but when Knight was hurt, Spooner stole the spotlight with his hard work and perseverance. He even played four games in the NHL in the 2012-13 season. Keep an eye on this utensil, I think he's out to prove he's worth the risk.
(D).
Like a good wine, Trotman seems to be getting better with age. He had his AHL debut just this past season. In nine games he had 1 goal with 2 assists and 10 penalty minutes. While the Bruins are looking to give Dougie Hamilton a permanent spot on the blue-line, I think Trotman will be making a name for himself in the AHL this season. He might not get a spot playing next to Zdeno this season, but injuries happen and Trotman has to be ready to step up. Let's be honest he's probably going to be better than Wideman ever was and that's all we can ask for.
Previous teammate of Jared Knight on the London Knights, Griffith lacks pro experience but seems to be doing well in the OHL. In 68 games he registered 45 goals with 40 assists finishing off the season with a plus 24. Hopefully the 20 year old will play in the AHL this season and continue to improve on his skills. I think we will be seeing more of Griffith in the future.
Most of the Rookies will either play in the OHL or AHL this season. Some fresh faces that won't be at Rookie camp but have a chance at a spot in the lineup are; Dougie Hamilton, Matt Bartkowski, Torey Krug, and Jordan Caron. There are some holes in our lineup now so I'm intrigued to see how the Bruins fit players in. Who is going to skate on the first line with Lucic and Krejci? Who will they have running drills with Bergeron and Marchand? Who will Chris Kelly be centering? Where will they put the veteran Iginila and the new guys Eriksson and Morrow?
So many questions, only 26 Days to go.
Happy Rookie Camp, and may the odds be ever in your favor!
